Awaiting Orders (Getting Out of the military)

Awaiting Orders (Getting Out of the military)

Awaiting Orders.

You did your time. You served honorably (or not), and now the long-awaited moment has come. You're free.

...

"What happens next?" is a different question from "What will I do now?"

The easy way out is to simply react to events and follow the checklist. But freedom demands more. Our work begins with finding a strategy and creating a different future.

There are choices to be made.

Stay put or move to another town... Stick around the new job to make manager or senior leadership, or start your own business... List your work on UpWork or Etsy, or build your own storefront... Make music and put it on vinyl or Spotify... Raise your prices or lower them... Re-enlist in the same branch or switch branches... Use your GI Bill to get a degree or take an apprenticeship... Finally get married or continue searching... Start a blog or a podcast... Move back in with your parents or get your own place... Take that overseas contracting job or stay with your family...

Too many choices. Too many options.

Confronted with so much choice, it's tempting to simply do your job. To pretend it's up to someone else. To put your head down and follow instructions.

Don't surrender. Don’t revert to the numbing day-to-day grind of monotonous complacency. You can make things better.
